TIPS FOR A GOOD SCORE IN IELTS SPEAKING TEST

TIPS FOR A GOOD SCORE IN IELTS SPEAKING TEST

IELTS speaking test can be daunting for many unless the candidate has an in depth understanding of the nature of the test and how bands are given. So it is necessary to learn the tips for a good score in IELTS Speaking Test

HOW TO TAKE THE IELTS SPEAKING TEST?

Examiners assess a candidate’s performance bases on four criteria: Fluency and coherence, lexical resource, grammatical range and accuracy, and pronunciation. Thus following are the tips for a good score in IELTS Speaking Test:

  1. Speak fluently but naturally. The pace should be well controlled. It should neither be too fast nor with long pauses. Having a balance between spontaneity and fluency on one hand and focus on accuracy on the other is important.
  • If necessary you may ask questions to clarify whatever you need to understand. However, do not constantly ask for it throughout the test.  Do attempt an answer to every question and do not leave any question unanswered.
  • If you are not quite sure about how to frame your answer, give yourself a little time to think and gather your thoughts. You may say, “Could you repeat that please?” or “Well, I have never thought about that before……” In the speaking part of the test, the knowledge of the topic is not assessed.  Simple ideas using excellent English will give you your desired band. Just remember not to change the topic.
  • Speak from your heart with a good expression in your voice. The tone is important. A grammatically correct answer will not have the desired impact if delivered in a flat tone. Do not shy away from expressing your feelings through your voice.
  • Remember not to give short replies. Extend your speech and do not give short replies. Never give one word answers even if the question can be answered in one word. What matters is that you are able to express your thoughts clearly, in detail and in good English.
  • Make a good first impression. Look good, feel good and be chatty.
  • Do not panic if you make a mistake. You can always correct yourself and start afresh. Even if you are unable to correct your error, do not dwell on it. The score is decided by the general overall performance and is not based on each and every word or sentence you speak.
  • Use a range of grammatical structures and consciously make the effort to produce the best language structures you are capable of.
  • Use the kind of vocabulary that is suited for the IELTS test

HOW TO ATTEMPT THE THREE DIFFERENT SECTIONS OF THE IELTS SPEAKING TEST

For a better understanding of the tips for a good score in the IELTS Speaking Test, it is also necessary to focus on the three separate sections of the Speaking Test separately.

Following are the tips for a good score in the IELTS Speaking Test according to the sections that need to be attempted.

Section 1: It is more like a chat. The questions are easy, be chatty

Section 2: Use the one minute to take notes. Breaking down the questions in the cue card into several smaller questions and taking a note of the key words in the cue card will give you enough content to develop a rich and a long answer. Refer to these notes and speak at length as is required for this section. Remember not to repeat yourself.

Section 3: Give an opinion and support it with an argument. Do not try to be right. You are not judged on your opinion or thoughts. The bands are given by the language you use.

HOW TO PRACTICE FOR THE IELTS SPEAKING TEST

Tips for a good score in IELTS speaking Test includes following the right strategy for practice before taking the test.

  1. Practice answering sample questions. The questions are fairly easy but practice is the key to getting a higher band.
  2. Practice opening lines. Practice linking words to link your thoughts. To avoid sounding abrupt when finishing your dialogue, practice using appropriate words and phrases for conclusion. Learn to use appropriate genre specific vocabulary. After researching on the common topics for speaking test.  Use effective vocabulary to communicate well. Refrain from forcing yourself to fit in high sounding heavy vocabulary in your speech unless you are absolutely certain about the usage.
  3. Don’t learn answers by heart. A memorized answer will not be appreciated. Learning full scripts is a bad idea. Your own thoughts expressed in your own words is desirable. Learn appropriate words and collocations and adopt them in your speech
  4. Pronunciation is an important skill to master for the Speaking test. Good English by itself will not get you your desired band if you can’t speak clearly. Your speech must be understandable.
  5. Record yourself doing several IELTS speaking tests. Identify your weaknesses and take action to improve those shortcomings.
  6. Work on getting a better general proficiency in the language and practice speaking with confidence.
  7. Engage in a warm up just before the test to perform to the best of your ability on the test day
